Pool House Expansion Project, Day 79-80 - 13-14/01/16

Concrete work, Screens, and Tiling

Days Seventy Nine Through Eighty , 13 - 14 January, 2016

The day got off to a good start. Carlos applying mortar to finish the concrete work for the cemetery ring. That's really looking nice.
Carlos Working on the Cemetery Ring
While Carlos worked on that, Omar and the guys were finishing up stapling the shade cloth to the screen frames.
Stapling the Shade Cloth
Vladimir is marking the frames so they can predrill screw holes for when they're mounted to the window openings of the walkway.

And, here's how they look in place. Really gives the house a finished appearance.
Showing Screens From Canal-Side
This also was the start of tiling for the house. Here George is chipping way at blobs of concrete and mortar that accumulated during the course of construction. They want to have a fairly smooth surface to lay the tile.
Prepping For Tile
This is the first bit of tile going down for the walkway. It's quite a striking stone look and feel to the tile. We got it at Boxito in Chetumal. Boxito is a Mexican chain store, sort of a tile, appliance, and fixture store. We also bought the one piece toilets (one for the pool house and one for the Menonnite house) there as well.
Walkway Tiling Has Started
From another angle, this gives you a good idea of the way the walkway will look when it's all tiled up and ready to go. Quite impressive. The texture will also keep it relatively slip-free when it gets wet.
Walkway Tile Going Down
On the far side of the walkway, they're measuring to get started tiling on that side.
Getting Set To tile On the far Side
Boxes of tile. The stuff weighs a ton. It comes eight tiles to a box. They come banded two boxes at a time and it's almost too much for one person to move.
Couple of Boxes of Tile
The far side course is being started now, all to meet up at the south walkway.
Another Course Being Started
The job is moving along now, after somewhat of a slow start. I'm thinking within a day or so, they should be grouting the walkway. And then, moving to the interior tiles.
Moving Right Along
There's many more photos than appear in each posting. You can see all the photos of the construction project on Flickr at: https://www.flickr.com/gp/winjama/0wVc3s. There will be new photos added each day of the project.

Those are some nice looking tiles! They do look just like stone in the photos.

Hi Wilma,

Yes, they are nice, aren't they? They're also hard to work with, well, as far as cutting anyway. They're porcelain and very hard, making it hard to cut and even then, you usually have to smooth out some of the cut edges a bit. Not for the faint of heart, I guess. Glad I'm not doing them.

Cheers,
Dave
