Sleeping Though The Oscars

First, let me say, we aren't going to watch the Oscars. Three hours long and it doesn't even start till past our bedtime. I don't think so.

But, in the spirit of things, we did watch one of the contenders tonight - Avatar. I have to say, the special effects were spectacular. But, then I thought the effects in 2012 were spectacular too. It's just that 2012's story was (ahem), shall we say, weak. Yes, we shall.

Avatar's story was good, a bit on the schmaltzy side at times. Both Dianna and I agreed at the end that watching Avatar was a bit like watching Dances With Wolves In Spacesuits. Not that I didn't like Dances With Wolves - far from it. I thought it was a very good movie and it won seven Oscars.

Avatar's a good movie, but I just don't see it as a contender for seven Oscars, much less Best Picture, even though it is nominated for nine, including Best Picture. I guess we'll all find out in the morning, unless you're one of the millions who'll stay up and watch the whole thing.

Generally, the military scenes are pretty good (as they were in Alien, also directed by James Cameron), with the exception of Colonel Quaritch, the private military head - he's just a little too over the top for me - drinking coffee and standing beside the pilot of his craft while they're flying high-speed maneuvers.

I found it interesting that they could manage a human/Na'vi hybrid body, to be inhabited through use of  a mental-link by genetically-matched humans, but were unable to repair former Marine and paraplegic Jake Sully's legs. Seems like fixing his legs would have been child's play by comparison... But, what do I know?

Anyway, I probably wouldn't mind watching Avatar again (I've seen Dances With Wolves several times). I just wonder how long before someone comes out with a pron version where Neytiri and Jake do the nasty?
